Accounting can be defined as a process that involves the communication of any kind of financial information about a business entity to entities or users who are relevant.

These entities can include banks and vendors (these can be categorized as creditors), potential shareholders, government agencies, financial analysts, and economists.

The field of accounting can be segregated into two:

  • Financial Accounting.
  • Management Accounting.

The field of management accounting focuses on the business entity itself by providing the employees, auditors, owner-managers, and managers inside the business with information. The primary aim of this accounting field is to give the people in the business entity with management and operation-related decisions.

One of the most noted skills that an Accountant possesses is communicating financial statements and helping the audience select relevant information.

To pursue an accounting career, you need to be grounded in mathematics. You also require the ability to analyze, compare, and interpret figures and facts as soon as possible.

Students who intend to pursue a career in accounting may plan to go for a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree, as this will make students well equipped with logical and numerical thinking skills. It helps them learn how to pay attention to details and equip their analytical thinking that may be required to organize financial data in a significant amount.

As an accounting graduate, there are different career options you can choose from. They include being a:

  • tax adviser,
  • an economist,
  • payroll clerk,
  • an accountant,
  • chief financial officer (CFO),
  • anti-money laundering specialist,
  • management consultant,
  • auditor,
  • retail banker,
  • treasury analyst, and
  • cost estimator.

It is the responsibility of an accountant to manage and analyze transactions and capital holdings. Generally, the business world is primarily the responsibility of an accountant.

A potential accountant is required to show:

  • significant attention to detail,
  • be conversant with numbers or digits, and
  • show strong organizational capabilities.

Accounting students are required to have a good understanding of the main elements of business practice. They are also required to communicate with personal clients effectively. This shows that the study of accounting is an interdisciplinary profession.

If you enroll in an accounting program, you will go through your foundation year in your first year in school; during this first year, students learn about all the functions an accountant performs.

Students also learn about the study of business computing and company structure. Some courses the accounting student may be required to complete in their second and third years may grant work placements (co-op/internship) that offer payments to students.

If you intend to study accounting, then it’s an excellent option. This is because of the high demand for accountants in every organization, and a significant benefit they enjoy is the stability and high payment. It does not matter if an economy is drowning in recession; there will always be the need for an accountant.

A lot of accountants will get a job within the government to help manage the expenses on contracts. Accountants may also work for personal clients who intend to minimize their tax bills. Accountants can also provide financial advice to these private clients. An accountant can equally have a role to play in Legal professions if the accountant has additional knowledge in law.

IS CANADA THE RIGHT CHOICE TO STUDY ACCOUNTING?

Moving to Canada to study is a great choice as it is less expensive to live and study when compared to other advanced countries around the world, such as America, Britain, and Australia.

Canada offers quality education, great career options, and prospects during and after your studies. For example, an international student who completes their studies at a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) in Canada, will have the opportunity to remain in Canada to work after their studies for up to three years. Most schools in Canada provide students aid jobs to the student’s enrolled in accounting programs from their second or third year.

In addition, Bachelor of Business Administration and Master’s students who achieve the minimum required mark by the Chartered Professional Accountants of Canada (CPA Canada) in certain business and accounting courses are able to skip the equivalent CPA Preparatory (PREP) courses, as approved by the CPA Program Transfer Credit Guide. This gives students a quicker route to obtain both a degree at the Canadian educational institution (college/university) and also a Chartered Professional Accountants (CPA) designation.

Some schools like Carleton University gives students an extra advantage as the student will be exempted from the CPA Professional Education Program (PEP) and directly entered into the pool for the CPA finals. Thereby fast-tracking the process for the student to have their CPA designation.

Chartered Professional Accountants of Canada (CPA Canada) is the national body instituted to support a unified accounting profession in Canada. CPAs are highly attractive to employers for their expertise in contributing to improved efficiency and growth.

The Canadian Payroll Association (CPA) also has approved credit transfer of certain BBA accounting and business courses, which counts towards its professional certifications:

  • Payroll Compliance Practitioner (PCP).
  • Certified Payroll Manager (CPM).

I am a prospective accounting student wishing to study in Canada. I have second class lowerdivision in Accountancy. Not knowing which of the above course to choose from with a cheap tuition fees and cost of living

    1. Amaechi Priscilla Chinedozie,
Most universities in Canada prefer students with a second class higher division or better, for their master’s program. So, if you are looking to pursue post-graduate studies in Canada, your best bet will be to look at postgraduate programs (e.g. PGD) at Canadian colleges since you have a second class lower division in Accountancy.
